2012 Nissan Versa

Intro

The Versa is Nissan's entry-level car with the intention of attracting economy-minded buyers with its mileage, price and larger size than most other vehicles in its class.

The Versa is available as a hatchback or sedan, the sedan is powered by a 107-hp 1.6-liter four cylinder engine, while the hatchback gets a 122-hp 1.8-liter. The sedan can be equipped with either a five-speed manual or optional Xtronic CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission), the hatchback buyer has a choice between a six-speed manual, a four-speed automatic or the Xtronic CVT. Safety comes from six standard airbags, tire pressure monitoring, anti-lock brakes with panic assist, front seat belt pretensioners, side impact beams in all doors and electronic stability/traction control.

For 2012, the sedan as been redesigned inside and out for increased cargo space, efficiency and feature availability. The hatch remains the same as 2011, but with new packages for the S trim, and new standard equipment on the SL such as 16-inch alloy wheels, Bluetooth, Intelligent Key, auto-dimming mirror and a leather steering wheel with audio controls.

It's a decent around-town driver and has cargo space at the top of its class.

The Versa's exterior dimensions beat those of the Chevrolet Aveo, Toyota Yaris and Honda Fit, and the five-seat interior trumps all but the Aveo in volume.

Steep inclines don't resemble mountains in the path of Versa. It has more get up and go--and keep going--than its rivals.

Versa gets the nod if looking for high mileage without sacrificing room, comfort, looks and amenities.

The four-door Versa also distinguishes itself from its competitors with many upmarket features and a 122-horsepower engine, making it a great choice for buyers looking for an entry vehicle with a little more spunk.

...those who haven't looked at subcompacts recently might be surprised by its high level of fit and finish... Although it wasn't designed to be a sport hatch, the Versa manages some zip off the line.
